RS Francisco explains how he prepares for his role as Song Liling in M. Butterfly

IT was a very fabulous press preview of RS Francisco‘s latest play, M. Butterfly. Media, critics, and bloggers were gathered in Globe Auditorium, Maybank Performing Arts Theater in BGC last Wednesday, September 12.

We had a chance to talk to the casts of M. Butterfly. We asked RS about what he felt during the nude scene. Despite of the fact that he already portrayed the role of Song Liling in 1992 Dulaang UP production of M. Butterfly, he was feeling nervous about the scene. “‘[I thought to my self] maraming artistang manonood bukas. Paano ako maghuhubad?’ Siyempre, may nginig pa rin. May takot.” He laughed.

However, he makes sure that he will easily overcome the fear like what happened in 1992, “Even before na ginawa ko ito, [first few days] kinakabahan ako. After a week or two na pagkakagawa and we went on tour before, sanay na sanay na ako”. RS said.

We also asked RS about how he prepared for the role, “I had to diet. In fact, not only diet, I had liposuction. So, para maging slim ako kasi maghuhubad ako. Medyo nahirapan din ako kasi dapat magmukhang babae ako. Hindi drag queen. Pinalambot ang mukha ko. Pinalambot ang mata. Dapat magmukha akong babae, hindi drag queen”. He declared.

What does he think about his co-actor, Olivier Borten, who played the role of French diplomat Rene Gallimard? “He’s a first time actor sa Pilipinas. He’s a theater actor sa Paris, France. So, maganda kasi very raw ang attack. Makikita mo ang vulnerability niya. So he fed me, and I fed him. Maganda naman ang chemistry namin”. RS said.

Meanwhile, we asked Olivier what he thinks about RS as an actor and producer, “He’s great. He gives so much on stage. He’s a very patient person. Since he’s one of the producers, he has a general view of the whole thing. So, he can see things I never think of. He gives a very interesting notes between him and I.” Olivier explained.
